SUBJECT: TRUSTEE REMUNERATION AND EXPENSE ALLOWANCES

In view of the roles and responsibilities for trustees established by legislation and the policies of the Board, it is expected that all trustees participate in all required functions of the Board to the extent possible.

8.1 The Board of School Trustees shall annually review the scale of remuneration and payment schedules set for the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, and other trustees; and may authorize changes to that scale. [SA s.71]

8.2 The Board shall annually review the allowances for expenses necessarily incurred by trustees in the discharge of their duties; and may authorize changes to those allowances. [SA s.71]

8.3 Effective January 1, 2006, the allowances shall be as follows:

Chair - annual indemnity of $ 12,000.00

Trustees - annual indemnity of $ 10,000.00

and V.C.P.I. annually effective January 1, 2007

Accordingly, trustees shall to the best of their ability:

• Inform the Secretary-Treasurer if a trustee is unable to attend any meeting.

• Notify the Board in writing if they expect to be absent from the district or otherwise unable to attend any statutory function for a period of more than 30 days.

• After a 30-day absence from Board regular or special meetings, and committee meetings, the honorarium of a trustee may be reduced by Board resolution. This reduction would be calculated by prorating the number of regular, special, and committee meetings missed by the total number of meetings.

• The calculation of time shall be 30 days from the end of the day of the last attended special or regular Board meeting.

• Under section 52(2) of the School Act, a trustee is considered to be ‘disqualified’ when that trustee is absent, except for illness or the Board has given leave, from a legally called special or regular meeting of the board for a period of three consecutive months.

• The Board, by resolution, may grant a leave beyond three months to any trustee for any reason deemed acceptable to the Board.
