International Study Program

At School District No. 78, we welcome children from around the world to our International Students Program. The program accepts students at the following levels:

Elementary School Level: grades 4 to 7, ages 9 to 12
Secondary School Level: grades 8 to 12, ages 13 to 17

Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is that of a collaborative learning community. With our many educational partners, we plan for and support sound school governance and quality educational opportunities for all students. Our curriculum is determined by student and school needs.

We believe teachers transform children’s lives, and we strive to support our teachers in their ongoing development of effective teaching practices. We focus on staying relevant to today’s learning needs and economic opportunities. Our goal is to develop responsible citizens through academic, career and social development opportunities.

Study Options

Students may pursue a variety of courses, including Long Term and Short Term programs. All International students are integrated into the regular curriculum as much as possible and receive the extra support by school staff to ensure a positive, worthwhile experience. In all Options and Programs, ESL classes are offered as part of the program.

(1) Long Term Stay & Study

Long Term students register for a full academic year, which usually runs from September 1 to June 30. This long-term option provides deep immersion experience in Canadian culture and education. Students find their English improves rapidly. They have time to take advantage of the many educational, social, cultural and sporting activities the area offers.

Students in the Long Term Program may register in either of the following:

(a) The Graduation Program which leads to a B. C. Graduation Certificate. In this Program, course selection is determined by the student and school counselors and/or administrator based on student needs and graduation requirements.

(b) The B.C. Credit Program where the student receives credit for the courses passed but does not complete all of the courses required for Graduation certificate, i.e. he/she does not complete Grade 12.

(c) A Cultural and Language Program in which students study for a year (September to June) but are more interested in learning about life and school in Canada and how to speak English better than they are in seeking B. C. Credits.

(2) Short Term Cultural Stay & Study

Some students may prefer a shorter stay, or a stay that puts less focus on academic study and more on cultural experience. During these programs, educational, tourist and athletic activities are included. These students may register for the following:

(a) Winter Program: January-February
(b) Spring Program: March
(c) Summer Program: July-August
