Frequently Asked Questions

Who will be responsible for my child in Canada?
In British Columbia, students under the age of 19 are considered to be minors. Minors living away from their parents in Canada must complete a form granting legal custodianship to a legal guardian. All minor applicants must supply a notarized declaration — signed by the parents or legal guardians in the country of origin, as well as one signed by the custodian in Canada — stating that arrangements have been made for the custodian to act in place of a parent. The Visa Officer must be satisfied that adequate arrangements are in place for the care and support of minor children who are unable to support themselves.

If my child is travelling alone to Canada, what do we need to know?
Minor children travelling alone must bring with them information (name, address, phone number) about the person or school that will be responsible for them. Usually the Letter of Acceptance and the Study Permit from Citizenship Canada will be acceptable. If the child is the subject of a custody order, proof of custody and the other parent’s consent must also be provided.

Minors travelling without their parents require a letter of permission from the non-accompanying parent(s) and a letter from their custodian in Canada.

Does my child need medical coverage in British Columbia and how does he/she obtain it?
Medical coverage is important, and it’s a mandatory requirement for foreign students. The District will provide medical insurance for the first three months of your child’s stay in Canada. When your child arrives, School District No. 78 will apply for British Columbia medical coverage on your child’s behalf.

What is a study permit and what process do I follow to get one?
Students from outside Canada are required to have a study permit. A study permit is a written authorization issued to foreign students to engage in studies in Canada. Once the application and fees are received, Fraser-Cascade School District will provide a Letter of Acceptance to you to present to Citizenship and Immigration Canada allowing the student to obtain a visa to enroll in the school’s program.

Where can I find out more information about Foreign Students in Canada?
Please visit the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website for more information about arriving in Canada under a study permit.
