Accounts:
You will need an account to access
and read your electronic mail with your home computer. You may request
this account by contacting the Postmaster at 604-869-5848 ( lgrace@sd78.bc.ca
).
At School District 78 we commonly use the
first initial and full last name for userID - so if your name is Jane
Educator, your e-mail address will be
jeducator@sd78.bc.ca and your username( UserID) will be jeducator. This also provides an easy first guess
if you are contacting SD78 colleagues whose mail address
you do not know.
(All account names and password keys are in lowercase unless you request
otherwise)
.

TCP/IP
Networking Protocol / DNS (domain
name servers):
You must have the
TCP/IP Protocol installed so that your computer can communicate
with other machines on the Internet. You can check that TCP/IP is
installed though the NETWORK control panel. (Open
MyComputer, Open Control Panel, Click Network Icon). If
TCP/IP is not listed in the network properties box then use the Add
Protocol selection to install it. In the TCP/IP properties box,
choose 'get an IP address automatically' as the connection type.
Your Internet Service Provider
will probably populate your TCP/IP with the addresses of DNS servers on
their network. If not, open the TCP/IP properties box, select the
DNS Tab and configure this service with the following DNS information -
then choose OK to save your changes.
142.22.250.77
142.32.100.15
(...Apple users may need these numbers as well as
TCP/IP)
E-Mail Configuration:
There are two last pieces of
information your e-mail reader will need in order to correctly process
your mail. These are the POP3 Server Address and the SMTP Server
Address. Enter mail1.sd78.bc.ca in both
address locations. If your mail reader doesn't use an account
wizard to configure your mail settings, you may access this area through
the file menu. (Account settings or Preferences).
(N.B. If you are connecting
from home across a Telus connection, the SMTP Server Address
must be set to smtp.telus.net
or you will be unable to send
mail.)
When checking for your mail messages the first time, a dialog box may
open asking for your account username (ie. jeducator) and password (see above).
You should now successfully connect to our mail service and you should
be able to reach Internet sites with your Internet browser.
Happy networking.
